Texas Senate candidate James Talarico (D) is facing a wave of online backlash after suggesting the country might be better off if it were run more like a kindergarten classroom. The comment, delivered in a direct-to-camera video, was quickly seized on by conservative commentators as evidence of a broader pattern they find troubling about his campaign. In the clip, Talarico posed a question to viewers: “What if we ran our world like we run a kindergarten classroom? Because at the end of the day, aren’t we all just really big kindergartners?”
The remark did not land as intended with many on the right. Andrew Kolvet, a spokesman for Turning Point USA, offered a terse assessment: “He’s just so … soft. I hate it.”
T.J. Moe, a contributor to The Blaze, expressed disbelief that the candidate would consider the idea politically viable. “How is it possible that a grown man thinks this is a winning idea? Where have all the men gone? It’s baffling,” Moe said.
Others latched onto the kindergarten comparison as an unflattering label. “Really Big Kindergartner is actually the best description I’ve heard of what Talarico looks like,” one user wrote.
Conservative pundit Chris Loesch went further, writing, “Never let this gelatinous creep around a kindergartner regardless how he identifies.”
Record on Gender Issues Draws Scrutiny
The online mockery comes as Talarico’s record on transgender issues faces renewed attention. According to The Daily Wire, he has made a series of moves that have raised red flags for opponents, particularly around support for transgender-identifying individuals.
The report points to his backing of policies that would provide young children access to cross-sex hormones and what critics describe as body mutilation. It also highlights a vote for legislation that would classify parents who decline to accommodate their children’s wishes regarding gender identity as having committed child abuse.
That vote occurred last year, according to the Lone Star Liberty PAC, which resurfaced a 2019 clip of Talarico discussing the issue. In that clip, Talarico said, “Some of us, I think, really do consider this abusive behavior … an unwillingness to identify, or, to acknowledge a child’s gender identity, we consider that abusive to the child, abusive and destructive.”
The PAC posted the video on X on September 14, 2026, framing it as evidence that Talarico had voted for legislation making parents who do not affirm their child’s gender identity guilty of child abuse.
Talarico Attempts to Shift Position
More recently, during a Fox News interview, Talarico sought to distance himself from some of his past positions. He claimed he no longer believes there are six genders and said he would oppose allowing biological males to participate in girls’ and women’s sports if their presence impacted “safety and fairness.”
That repositioning has not quelled criticism from the right, where his kindergarten comment is being treated less as a one-off gaffe and more as a window into a worldview out of step with Texas voters.
Talarico is competing for the Democratic nomination in a race that ultimately will decide who holds the seat currently occupied by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX). On the Republican side, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is vying for the same seat. The general election matchup, should Talarico emerge from the primary, would pit the two against each other in a state where cultural issues have long animated GOP turnout.
For now, the kindergarten pitch has become a defining viral moment of Talarico’s campaign — one that his critics are eager to keep in circulation as they argue he is too soft, too out of touch, or both, for the Senate.
