Texas Dem Senate Candidate Talarico: Allah, Nirvana Are ‘Equal Pathways’ to Truth

A newly resurfaced video shows Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico denying the Christian teaching that Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation, saying instead that Islam and other faiths are “equal pathways to truth.” The comments, first reported by Breitbart News, are drawing fresh scrutiny in his high-profile race.

In the clip, Talarico describes all world religions as different routes to the same destination. “I find that they’re all kind of equal pathways to truth. You know, that’s how I think,” he says. “I always think of all of the world’s faith traditions as like a circle with that divine mystery of the universe in the middle. And we all have different names for that mystery.”

Talarico specifically lists Allah, Nirvana, and the Great Spirit among the names people use for what he calls the same “divine mystery.” “Whether it’s God or Yahweh or Allah or Nirvana, the Great Spirit, whatever you call it, this is all, you know, different pathways to the same kind of fundamental truth of reality,” he continues.

The remarks contradict core Christian doctrine, which holds that Jesus Christ is the exclusive path to God—a point that could become a flashpoint in the Texas Senate race, where faith has long been a central theme.

This is not the first time Talarico has waded into religious controversy. As Breitbart News previously reported, he delivered a Texas House invocation in 2021 that referenced the Torah, the Quran, the Gita, the Dharma, and the First Epistle of John before concluding, “In all your many names, we pray.” That prayer drew criticism from some Christian conservatives who said it blurred the lines between biblical faith and other traditions.

Talarico has also faced backlash for other statements about Christianity. He has called Christianity the “most violent” religion and said it had done “more damage” to Islam than any other faith, according to Breitbart News. He has also said God is “beyond gender” and claimed that the Bible is “silent on abortion.”

The resurfaced video adds to a growing list of controversial positions that could shape the campaign. Talarico, a former schoolteacher and state representative, is running as a Democrat in a state where Republicans have long dominated statewide races. His opponent and other critics are likely to use his remarks to paint him as out of step with Texas voters, many of whom identify as evangelical Christians.
