Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) delivered a blistering condemnation of former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases chief Anthony Fauci, calling him a “lying disgrace who should be prosecuted” following revelations from Fauci’s personal diaries and recent congressional testimony.
“In January 2020, I warned China was lying and the COVID virus almost certainly came from China’s coronavirus lab,” Cotton said in a statement to Breitbart News on Wednesday. “Tony Fauci’s diary shows how he worked with the liberal media to smear me, cover for China, and lie to the American people.”
The Arkansas senator added, “Fauci is a lying disgrace who should be prosecuted. And the left must never be given power again.”
Cotton’s statement came after Fauci appeared before the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs on Wednesday, during which the former health official reportedly pleaded the Fifth Amendment in response to questions about the COVID response.
Early Lab Leak Warning Met With Media Dismissal
Cotton was among the first public officials to suggest that the coronavirus pandemic may have originated from a laboratory in Wuhan, China, rather than from the city’s seafood market as initially claimed. In January 2020, at the pandemic’s outset, he sent a letter to then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar, and Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf calling for an investigation into the virus’s origin.
“If the virus didn’t originate in the seafood market, it’s critical to determine where it did— especially, I must add, since Wuhan is also home to a biosafety-level-4 super-laboratory that engages in the study of coronavirus, among other deadly pathogens,” Cotton wrote in the letter.
The following month, when Cotton publicly discussed the lab leak possibility, major news outlets responded with harsh criticism and dismissals. The New York Times ran a headline declaring “Senator Tom Cotton Repeats Fringe Theory of Coronavirus Origins.” The Huffington Post published an article titled “Don’t Listen To Sen. Tom Cotton About Coronavirus,” asserting the senator was “boosting a debunked fringe theory circulating among tabloids and conservative media outlets.”
CNN published a piece stating “Tom Cotton is playing a dangerous game with his coronavirus speculation,” while Business Insider concluded that “a GOP senator keeps pushing a thoroughly debunked theory that the Wuhan coronavirus is a leaked Chinese biological weapon gone wrong.”
Media Reversal on Lab Leak Theory
The narrative shifted dramatically over the following year. In May 2021, the Washington Post acknowledged that the lab leak theory had “suddenly became credible.” The New York Times later reported that then-Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemned China for a “lack of transparency during the pandemic” and called for an investigation into the virus’s origins. CNN eventually concluded that the lab leak theory was “reasonable.”
According to Breitbart News, other outlets that had initially dismissed the theory also backtracked on their earlier reporting.
Fauci Diary Revelations
The recent release of Fauci’s personal diaries has reignited controversy over the handling of the lab leak theory. According to the reporting, Fauci’s private writings show that scientists in early discussions suspected the coronavirus likely stemmed from a laboratory, even as Fauci publicly characterized such suggestions as conspiracy theories.
“There was not total agreement about the likelihood of deliberate insertion,” Fauci reportedly wrote, referring to the engineering of the virus in a lab. According to the diary entries, only two scientists seemed to openly disagree with the possibility of the lab leak theory, while others believed it was very possible.
The diaries also reportedly revealed Fauci’s personal interests beyond the pandemic response, including what was characterized as an obsession with fame, enjoyment of conversations with celebrities, and pleasure in public adoration.
