Trump Predicts GOP Midterm ‘Win Big’ in Labor Day Message

President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Labor Day to predict a big Republican victory in the November midterms, while a new Harvard-Harris poll gives the GOP a slight edge among likely voters.

Trump Predicts GOP Midterm 'Win Big' in Labor Day Message

President Donald Trump used his Labor Day message on Monday to predict that Republicans will score a big win in the November midterm elections, while also taking aim at Democrats in characteristically blunt fashion.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump congratulated Americans on the holiday but quickly pivoted to politics, writing: “Happy Labor Day to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics, Communists, and Dumocrats who will do anything possible to destroy our Country.” He added that after “fighting for 10 years,” his opponents “should finally acknowledge that your Favorite President (ME!), knows how to WIN!”

Trump went on to say that Democrats, though “exhausted,” are planning “one last shot at ruining America,” but he vowed, “We’re going to win the Midterms, BIG, and SAVE AMERICA!”

Historic Headwinds for the Party in Power

The president’s optimistic forecast comes as Republicans hold slim majorities in both chambers of Congress. The party controls the House by a 218–214 margin over Democrats, with one independent, Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA), who was formerly a Republican. In the Senate, Republicans hold a 53–47 advantage when all senators are present and voting.

History, however, is not on the GOP’s side. For a party holding the presidency and both houses of Congress, preserving those majorities in a midterm election has proven extraordinarily difficult. In the modern era, that feat has been accomplished only twice: in 2002, when Republicans expanded their majorities under President George W. Bush in the wake of the September 11 attacks, and in 1934, when Democrats grew their majorities under President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

New Poll Gives Republicans a Narrow Edge

Despite those headwinds, Republicans received a glimmer of hope in the latest Harvard-Harris poll. Among likely voters, 51 percent said they are more likely to vote for a Republican candidate, while 49 percent said the same for a Democrat, giving the GOP a 2-percentage-point advantage. The poll, conducted August 28–30, runs counter to broader polling trends that have shown Democrats with an edge on the generic congressional ballot.

The survey’s release coincides with a busy week for Republican midterm efforts. The party is preparing to host its first-of-its-kind midterm Republican Convention in Dallas, Texas, and the Trump-aligned Super PAC, MAGA Inc., has already committed $10 million to the Texas Senate race between Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico.

Trump’s Labor Day message and the poll’s findings underscore the high stakes of the upcoming election, as both parties brace for a fiercely contested battle for control of Congress.
