President Donald Trump on Tuesday sharply criticized the Supreme Court after it blocked a set of mail-in ballot safeguards his administration had directed the U.S. Postal Service to implement, calling the ruling a “bad decision” that will make election fraud easier and accusing the justices of lacking the courage to stand up to political pressure, according to Breitbart News.
Writing on Truth Social, the president said Republicans had been handed another setback from the high court, which he said took an extended period to rule and then cited a lack of time to put any alternative solution in place. He described mail-in voting as a corrupt and out-of-control “disaster,” writing that the country is the only one that has to tolerate what he called a nation-destroying scam.
What the Court Blocked
At issue were several measures the Postal Service had sought to adopt for handling election mail. Among them were a logo that would mark a ballot’s envelope as election mail, a barcode tied to an individual voter, and the capability to run ballots through high-speed processing equipment for scanning.
The ruling came down Monday. Justice Samuel Alito authored the dissent and was joined only by Justice Clarence Thomas.
Alito wrote that some of the plaintiffs lacked standing to bring the case and said others were advancing a claim the Court has recently characterized as a long-shot effort that seldom prevails. He also emphasized that the Postal Service holds broad authority to regulate the mail.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh, writing separately, conceded that there is “at least a fair prospect that the final rule falls within the Postal Service’s statutory authority,” but he pointed to the limited time remaining before the elections, saying state and local election officials could not reasonably implement the rule in time.
Trump Praises Alito and Thomas
Trump singled out the two dissenters for praise, calling them legends and saying they strongly disagreed with what he labeled a horrible and highly political ruling.
He framed the outcome as a significant defeat for his party and for the country, arguing that it opens the door to easier cheating by the political left on mail-in ballots. In his post, he wrote that the Supreme Court has let the nation down and claimed that certain justices are paralyzed by fear of far-left radicals, unable to muster what he called the courage necessary to save America.
A Broader Assault on the Court
The president’s criticism did not stop at the mail-in ballot case. He used the same post to attack the Court over other recent decisions, including its rulings involving his tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and on birthright citizenship.
On tariffs, Trump wrote that the decision would cost the country trillions of dollars over the coming years. He complained that the Court did not specify that money already paid would not have to be returned, which he said would benefit entities that he described as hostile to the country and that have been exploiting it for years.
He similarly denounced the birthright citizenship ruling as a total disaster, claiming it has already produced widespread corruption surrounding citizenship. He wrote that the damage is incalculable and constitutes an irreparable harm, adding that the Court’s refusal to act differently will be remembered negatively by history. According to Trump, the Supreme Court has been bullied and cajoled by the radical left into decisions that have set the country back by at least a century.
Most striking was his assessment of the justices he himself placed on the bench. Trump said the sitting justices are “a shell of their original selves” and no longer resemble the people he nominated during his first term. He nominated Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch during that period.
He concluded that the Court will be remembered for having issued some of the most destructive and damaging decisions in the nation’s history, and he acknowledged the political cost of his public criticism. He wrote that speaking out will likely cost him dearly for years to come, but that he considers it an obligation and a duty as president to do so for the sake of the country.
A Familiar Fault Line
Mail-in voting has been a persistent flashpoint in American politics since the 2020 election, with Trump repeatedly arguing that expanded absentee and mail balloting opens the door to fraud, a claim that election officials and numerous courts have found to be without evidence of widespread abuse. The administration’s directive to the Postal Service was itself an effort to impose stricter handling standards, and the Court’s decision leaves those measures unenforced for now.
Alito’s dissent, joined by Thomas, gives the administration’s allies on the bench a written record of disagreement. Whether that translates into any future legislative push in Congress remains to be seen, though Trump’s post made clear he intends to keep the issue alive on the political stage heading into the next election cycle.
