Trump Says He ‘Would Not Have Taken Back’ Harry and Meghan: ‘I Was Not a Fan’

President Donald Trump is welcoming the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s return to the United Kingdom — but that doesn’t mean he’d want them back in the royal fold.

“I was not a fan,” Trump told reporters Wednesday after a press conference with travel executives, according to Breitbart News.

Trump said he is “happy about it” that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have moved across the Atlantic, but made his feelings clear about their standing with the monarchy.

“If I were the Royal family, I would not have taken them back,” he cautioned.

The president’s remarks came during a Q&A session, where he reflected on his personal relationships with senior royals, saying he had a “really good relationship with the queen, really good” and that he “got to know her very well.” He also spoke warmly of King Charles III, noting he “knew him as Prince Charles and King Charles” and has “known him for a long time.”

Trump described the monarch as a “great, great guy,” but his tone shifted when discussing Harry and Meghan, accusing the couple of having “treated the Royal family with great disrespect” while pursuing their own agenda and maintaining a steady stream of public commentary.

“I didn’t like it,” he added, reiterating that, in his view, the royal family should have drawn a harder line.

Move back to the UK

The news of the Sussexes’ relocation first surfaced last month. According to Breitbart News and earlier reports from the Daily Telegraph and the Sun, the couple announced they were preparing to leave their Montecito, California mansion and return to Britain after a six-year break.

The family has reportedly settled into a private, non-Royal residence outside London. Their children — Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five — are set to start at a British school when the new academic year begins later this month.

Despite the move, Harry has reportedly ruled out returning to a working royal role. Still, he shows no indication of giving up his title, its privileges, or his place as fifth in the line of succession to his father, King Charles III.

Trump’s comments add to the ongoing scrutiny of the couple’s relationship with the royal family, which has been strained since they stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and later aired grievances in a high-profile interview with Oprah Winfrey and a Netflix docuseries.

The president has been publicly critical of Harry and Meghan in the past, but his latest remarks come as the family attempts to re-establish a foothold in the UK — and as questions remain about what kind of relationship they will have with the rest of the royals going forward.
