Two individuals carrying firearms engaged a gunman who opened fire at a Twin Falls, Idaho, In-N-Out restaurant on Sunday, according to law enforcement officials who credited their actions with saving lives.
At a press conference Sunday, Twin Falls County Sheriff Jack Johnson and Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks revealed that both an armed private citizen and an off-duty police officer shot at the attacker during the incident, which left three people dead including one In-N-Out employee.
“These people are true heroes in our community, and their actions diverted the shooter and no doubt saved many lives,” Sheriff Johnson said, according to the New York Times.
Armed Response Drove Shooter From Scene
Police Chief Matthew Hicks told reporters that the return fire from the armed civilian and off-duty officer appeared to have interrupted the attack. “We believe their actions helped drive the suspect away from the scene, preventing further casualties,” Hicks said, according to KARK. “We want to take a moment and commend the actions of the off-duty officer and the citizen, and their heroic action to stop this incident.”
The attacker, identified by police as a 24-year-old man, ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities have not yet released the attacker’s identity or disclosed a possible motive for the shooting.
Witness Accounts and Armed Civilian Involvement
Initial reports from the scene indicated that an armed bystander had confronted the shooter. Witness accounts suggested the civilian’s intervention may have prevented additional fatalities, though police only confirmed the full details of the armed response at Sunday’s press conference.
The revelation that two separate individuals — one a private citizen, the other an off-duty law enforcement officer — independently engaged the shooter underscores the chaotic nature of the attack and the quick response from armed individuals present at the scene.
The three victims killed in the attack have not yet been publicly identified, though authorities confirmed one was an employee of the In-N-Out location. Information about additional injuries, if any, was not provided during the press conference.
Gun Rights Debate Context
The incident occurs amid ongoing national debate over gun rights and armed self-defense. Proponents of concealed carry laws frequently cite incidents in which armed civilians intervene during active shooter situations as evidence supporting broader gun rights.
The Twin Falls shooting represents a case in which multiple armed individuals were present and able to respond to an active threat, a scenario gun rights advocates argue demonstrates the value of lawful gun ownership and carry permits.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, with authorities expected to release additional details about the sequence of events, the identities of those killed, and the circumstances that led to the attack.
