A United Airlines captain who once described the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel as “resistance by a brave people” has been taken off the flight schedule again — this time reportedly through at least October — according to reporting by The Daily Wire.
The renewed scrutiny comes after FlyDubai Flight FZ1073, in which an Indian captain was stabbed in his own cockpit by a Muslim co-pilot who then tried to crash the aircraft. That flight was carrying 174 people, 27 of them children.

United has confirmed only that it has “withheld this pilot from service pending an ongoing review,” according to the outlet. The airline did not confirm reports that the pilots’ union blocked an effort to fire Captain Ibrahim Mossallam, and no one has alleged that he harmed anyone.
A Post, A Review, A Return to the Cockpit
The sequence of events, as described in the Daily Wire piece, raises uncomfortable questions about how airlines treat public statements that endorse or celebrate mass violence: Mossallam posted his comment on Oct. 7, 2023, the day Hamas killed roughly 1,200 people. United removed him from service with pay while it investigated. About a month later, he was flying again. Now, with FZ1073 back in the headlines, the airline has reportedly grounded him once more.

The Daily Wire frames this as a failure of institutional nerve — the treatment of a statement praising a massacre as a human resources matter rather than a safety concern. Captains and first officers operate under a fitness-for-duty standard that reaches well beyond ordinary free-speech protections, covering alcohol use, medical conditions, and psychological stability, precisely because one person’s failure in a cockpit can kill hundreds of people. A pilot who fails a breathalyzer is grounded immediately. Under the current arrangement, the outlet argues, a pilot who cheers a massacre can be back at work within a month.
The column acknowledges a distinction that often gets blurred in public debate. The Daily Wire does not argue that a person’s religion should bar him from a cockpit. It argues that public endorsement of terrorism should. “Judge the post, not the prayer,” the piece states, suggesting a standard that separates personal faith from declared support for killing civilians.

What a Reasonable Standard Might Look Like
The piece proposes an ideological fitness review for any pilot who publicly praises, justifies, or celebrates mass violence against civilians. That review would weigh the pilot’s statements, affiliations, and any evidence of radical material, and it would happen before the pilot flies again. The Daily Wire argues the process should be independent rather than left to a union grievance procedure, and that airlines should state the standard in advance, apply it uniformly, and explain every reinstatement in writing.
The outlet also notes the collateral damage of the current approach: ordinary Muslims who fly without incident become suspects in the eyes of nervous passengers because of the actions of terrorists and the complacency of airlines. In that sense, the piece argues, those who turn a faith into a global threat profile do the most damage to Muslims themselves. It rejects the claim that the West hates Muslims simply because they are Muslims, drawing a line instead at the moment when Islam “turns from a personal faith into a system that wants to rule the lives, laws, and freedoms of others.”
The Daily Wire piece is careful to state that the review standard it proposes is not exotic. Airlines already know how to ground a pilot who endangers a flight, and they do so without hesitation. What is missing, the outlet concludes, is the willingness to apply the same logic to an ideology that announces its intentions in public. “Airlines will ground a pilot over a single drink,” it states. “Surely they can ground one who applauds a massacre.”
The author of the piece, A. S. Ibrahim, holds two PhDs in Islamic Studies and has written extensively on Islam, Sharia, and Western constitutional order. His books include “Sharia Versus the U.S. Constitution: Why Americans Must Choose Freedom” and “Muhammad’s Military Expeditions,” published by Oxford in 2024.
For passengers, the practical question remains unresolved. As the Daily Wire puts it, passengers will keep asking whether the person in the next seat — or in the cockpit — presents a risk, whether airlines like the question or not. The choice it presents is between a “phobia” stigma and a political correctness that ignores warning signs. Its preferred answer is neither: apply existing safety logic to declared support for terrorism, and do it before anyone boards.
