West Hollywood Becomes First U.S. City to Legally Recognize Throuples, Polyamorous Partnerships

West Hollywood made history this week by becoming the first U.S. city to legally recognize polyamorous relationships through a new domestic partnership ordinance. The measure, approved Tuesday by the WeHo City Council, allows groups of three or more consenting adults — commonly called “throuples” or “foursomes” — to register their relationships with municipal authorities.

The ordinance provides registered polyamorous partnerships with certain legal protections, including hospital visitation rights and enhanced tenant safeguards. However, it stops short of granting the full spectrum of rights afforded to married couples or traditional two-person domestic partnerships.

A ‘First Step’ Toward Legal Recognition

Christina Fialho, the attorney and LGBTQ+ advocate who spearheaded the initiative, told the Los Angeles Times the ordinance represents “just the beginning” of legal protections for polyamorous individuals. “I think it makes it possible for people to dream about a future they once thought was out of reach,” said Fialho, who first proposed the idea to Councilmember Chelsea Lee Byers in 2025.

To qualify, all partners must provide mutual consent and cannot be blood relatives. Notably, the registration isn’t limited to city residents — meaning polyamorous groups from across California and beyond can travel to West Hollywood for official recognition of their relationships.

Building on Progressive Policies

The domestic partnership measure follows West Hollywood’s 2025 anti-discrimination ordinance that added “family or relationship structure” as a protected class. That earlier legislation aimed to prevent housing, healthcare, and education discrimination against people in non-traditional relationships.

While supporters celebrate the move as groundbreaking, critics argue the ordinance challenges traditional family structures. The New York Post characterized the arrangements as “perverse” in its coverage of the new law.

West Hollywood, long known for its progressive policies toward LGBTQ+ communities, continues pushing boundaries with this latest expansion of relationship recognition. The city’s actions may spark similar initiatives in other liberal enclaves as polyamory gains increasing visibility in American culture.
