The White House is hammering Democrats after a Tuesday night House vote in which nearly the entire Democratic caucus opposed a Republican resolution denouncing “socialism in all its forms.”
The resolution ultimately passed 220-192, with every “no” vote coming from Democrats. Just eight Democrats crossed the aisle to support the measure, and two Democrats voted “present,” according to the Daily Wire.
White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis seized on the outcome, framing it as fresh evidence that the party has veered far from the American mainstream.
“Yet again, the Democrats prove how extreme their party has become,” Bis told The Daily Wire. “They support radical socialism, defunding federal law enforcement, and non-citizens voting in American elections.”
A Sharp Shift From Last Year
The vote stands in stark contrast to a nearly identical resolution passed last November, when 86 Democrats joined Republicans in condemning the “horrors of socialism.” This time, that number collapsed to just eight.
The dramatic drop-off comes as the Democratic Socialists of America continues to expand its influence on the left, and as some of the party’s most prominent figures have increasingly embraced the socialist label rather than run from it.
Republican strategists see the vote as a gift heading into the midterms, where control of the House and Senate will be decided. In many competitive House districts—where the electorate tends to be more moderate than the Democratic base—Republicans plan to highlight the vote as proof that Democrats have moved too far left.
But the dynamic is more complicated in key Senate races, where several Democratic nominees who emerged from primaries are firmly on the party’s left flank.
Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico, for instance, has described capitalism as an “oppressive system” that needs to be “dismantled.” In Michigan, Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed has tried to distance himself from the socialist label, but he has regularly courted the far-left wing of his party—including by campaigning alongside the controversial left-wing streamer Hasan Piker, who has a history of anti-American rhetoric.
Republicans are betting that such positions will be difficult to defend in a general election.
White House Highlights Trump Agenda
The White House, for its part, is vowing to keep the focus on President Donald Trump’s policy agenda rather than letting the socialist debate define the conversation.
“President Trump and Republicans will continue to deliver on his commonsense agenda that includes tax cuts for American families, border security, and record low prices for prescription drugs,” Bis told The Daily Wire.
The messaging strategy suggests the administration sees the socialism vote not just as a one-off attack line, but as part of a broader argument about Democratic priorities.
Democrats Fear Backlash From Base
The vote also exposed internal Democratic tensions. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) sharply criticized two members of his caucus—Reps. Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington—for helping Republicans move the resolution forward.
“The decision by two of our colleagues to blindside the entire House Democratic Caucus and join with the Republican majority to pass a procedural rule on the brink of failing represents a significant breach of trust,” Jeffries said, according to the Daily Wire.
That reaction underscores a central challenge for Democrats: many fear that siding with Republicans on any high-profile issue will anger the party’s activist base, even if the underlying position—like opposing socialism—poll well with the broader public.
Republicans have used similar resolutions to force Democrats into uncomfortable votes before. Earlier this year, 53 Democrats voted against a measure declaring Iran a state sponsor of terrorism—a designation that Republicans argue is unquestionable given Iran’s support for groups like Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis.
Tuesday’s vote gives Republicans another cudgel to wield on the campaign trail, and they show little sign of letting Democrats forget it.
