“When you decide to full-on don the garb that, in the vast majority of planet Earth, is mandatory for Muslim women and whose rejection is punishable by law, you are making a statement,” the piece says. It notes that France has banned the hijab in public spaces, describing it globally as “typically a form of compulsion on women.”
The columnist, who identifies as an Orthodox Jew, draws a distinction between wearing a hijab and a yarmulke, noting that “you don’t have to put on a yarmulke to walk into a synagogue.” He suggests the hijab is different because it symbolizes submission in a way that other religious head coverings do not.
