College football viewership is down 11% this season, with even the WNBA Finals outperforming marquee Saturday matchups on cable networks.

College Football Ratings Plummet 11% as WNBA Finals Outdraws Key Games

College football, long a ratings juggernaut in American sports, is facing an alarming viewership slump this season. According to Nielsen data provided to Front Office Sports, Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) broadcasts are averaging just 1.6 million viewers through the first nine weeks of the 2026 season—an 11% drop from the same period last year.

The WNBA Comparison That Stings

The decline becomes even more stark when compared to other sports. Game 7 of the WNBA Finals drew 3.3 million viewers on USA Network—a cable channel with far less reach than ESPN or other networks that carry college football. That single basketball game outperformed every college football matchup airing on cable that Saturday.

What’s Behind the Drop?

The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel points to several factors. “This season’s September nonconference schedule was notably less exciting than in recent years,” he wrote. Early-season matchups between major programs averaged 3.2 million viewers, down 9% from 2025, while conference games saw a 4.9% dip. Some of this stems from bad timing—last year’s thrilling LSU-Clemson opener drew 10.5 million viewers, while this season’s rematch (with Clemson unranked) pulled just 5.7 million.

Big Ten Blues

The struggles extend to traditionally dominant programs. Oregon, Penn State, Michigan, and USC have all underperformed, turning potential blockbuster October matchups into ratings disappointments. While Ohio State’s game against Indiana drew 10.4 million viewers, Penn State-Michigan managed only 4.5 million, and USC-Penn State stumbled with 2.9 million.

This weekend offers a chance for redemption, with Notre Dame facing Miami in a playoff-impact primetime clash and Alabama-LSU squaring off in a must-win SEC showdown. But for a sport accustomed to yearly growth, this season’s numbers mark a concerning trend.
