Seven people were shot, one fatally, when multiple gunmen stepped out of their vehicles and opened fire shortly after noon Sunday in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood, according to reporting from CWB Chicago and other local outlets.
The person killed has not yet been publicly identified. CWB Chicago reported that the deceased victim was a man.
Investigators believe at least 60 rounds were fired during the incident, a volume of gunfire that authorities said spread across the area as the shooters fled.
Suspect may have been injured during getaway
An officer indicated that one of the suspects — described as a Black male wearing a black hoodie over a white shirt and dark pants — may have been struck by a car and suffered a broken leg while trying to escape the scene. That detail has not been independently confirmed.
The shooting suspects remained at large as of the most recent reporting, and no arrests had been announced.
Teenager among the wounded
CBS News reported that the youngest victim is a 14-year-old boy, who is expected to survive his injuries. WGN-TV noted that one of the other surviving victims was a woman who was driving when the shooting began, and whose vehicle crashed into a CTA bus as a result of the gunfire.
The condition of the remaining victims has not been fully detailed in public reporting.
Homicide toll climbs past 298 for the year
The violence unfolded against the backdrop of Chicago’s ongoing struggle with gun crime. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, 298 people have been killed in the city so far in 2026.
The Humboldt Park shooting adds to a year marked by high-profile incidents of gun violence in Chicago, a city that has long been a focal point in the national debate over gun policy. Breitbart News has previously characterized Chicago as a “war zone” in its coverage of the city’s violence, while critics of that framing argue it oversimplifies complex local dynamics.
Chicago Police Department officials have not released additional information about a possible motive or whether the shooting was targeted. The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact local authorities.
