During a debate against Smiley, Morales framed his candidacy around an expansive view of what city government can accomplish. “I’m running for mayor because I believe government can do so much more to make our lives easier,” Morales said, describing his goal of building a “Providence for all.”
Smiley, for his part, sought to cast his opponent as an outsider more focused on a broader ideological project than on the day-to-day needs of the city. As mayor, the platform states, Morales would be “openly transparent about ICE sightings in our city,” citing what it describes as a significant increase in such sightings in Providence in recent months. The plan calls for establishing a dedicated task force made up of frontline community organizations and neighborhood leaders to share information on ICE sightings and develop plans to protect residents. That task force, according to the platform, would work with families, schools, and local businesses to ensure immigrant neighbors “feel safe and supported.”

Morales’ win is the latest in a series of primary victories by democratic socialists and left-aligned candidates across the country. Breitbart noted that he follows New York City’s socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other candidates who have won their primaries, including DSA member Angie Nixon in Florida and Melat Kiros in Colorado.
The string of victories comes amid broader polling data cited in the report. Roughly a quarter of Americans view Democrats as socialist, according to recent polling, while more than half of Democrats hold a more positive view of socialism than of capitalism. The same polling indicates that 62 percent of Democrats say they would vote for a candidate who described themselves as a democratic socialist.
For Providence, the outcome marks a shift in leadership for a city that has been led by Smiley, and it sets up a November matchup in which Morales enters as the heavy favorite.
