Federal immigration agents have been going door to door in several states to question residents about their immigration status and whether they have registered or voted in past elections, according to CBS News reporting highlighted by Breitbart News. The visits reportedly ramped up in September, putting the operation in full swing just weeks before the midterm elections.
The Department of Homeland Security is running the effort, which a department spokesperson described as an election-integrity push. On Monday, the Department of Justice announced that DHS agents in California had arrested more than 20 green card holders accused of registering to vote or casting ballots illegally, according to the report.
Arrests in California
One of those arrests has drawn particular attention. According to the reporting, dozens of agents descended on the home of a 72-year-old man from Belize, who was taken into custody “in his pajamas.” He is accused of illegally voting in the past four elections.
A DHS spokesperson framed the operation as part of a broader enforcement campaign. “HSI is actively rooting out and investigating election fraud wherever it can be found,” the spokesperson told the outlet, referring to Homeland Security Investigations. “Under President Trump, HSI is committed to restoring integrity to our election systems and ensuring that American citizens and only American citizens are electing American leaders.”
The door-to-door visits mark an unusual federal role in what has traditionally been a state-run process. Election administration, including maintenance of voter rolls and verification of eligibility, is generally handled by state and county officials, with federal prosecutors stepping in after alleged violations are identified.
Critics Warn of Intimidation
Civil rights and voting advocacy groups say sending armed federal agents to people’s homes could frighten eligible voters away from the polls, even when those voters have done nothing wrong. Jessica Marsden, a lawyer for the left-leaning advocacy group Protect Democracy, which is suing DHS over the operation, questioned both the scale and the manner of the effort.
“What we’re seeing now is the federal government is inserting itself into the state process for verifying their voter rolls in an unprecedented way,” Marsden said, according to the report. “And they are doing it in a way that seems maximally designed to scare lawful voters from participating.”
DHS pushed back on that characterization. A spokesperson said the operation is aimed at “preventing the dilution of the votes of U.S. citizens,” and added that people who are in the country legally and are not otherwise breaking the law have no reason to worry.
“Those who are here legally and are not breaking other laws have nothing to fear,” the spokesperson said.
A Long-Running Political Fight
The dispute over noncitizen voting is not new, but the tactics described in the CBS News report raise the stakes. Supporters of stricter verification argue that even a small number of improperly cast ballots undermines confidence in close races. Critics counter that noncitizen voting is rare, and that aggressive enforcement measures can burden citizens who are legally registered, particularly in immigrant communities where trust in federal authorities is already low.
With the midterms approaching, the door-knocking operation is likely to remain a flashpoint. Protect Democracy’s lawsuit against DHS is ongoing, and the arrests in California are expected to face scrutiny in court. For now, both sides are making their case to the public — one describing a fraud crackdown, the other describing a campaign of fear — as federal agents continue showing up at doorsteps across the country.
