Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed on Monday declined to defend the Green New Deal, pivoting instead to a message focused on lowering energy costs and creating jobs during a testy interview on Fox News Channel’s “Jesse Watters Primetime.”
Host Jesse Watters pressed El-Sayed on his past support for the Green New Deal, asking whether he drives an electric car. El-Sayed responded that he drives a plug-in hybrid made in the United States, but quickly turned the conversation to trade policy, accusing President Trump of starting or escalating a trade war with Canada that he said would make cars more expensive.
Watters then interjected, saying, “You want to get rid of the internal combustion engine.” El-Sayed pushed back: “No, I don’t. Who told you that?” Watters cited the Green New Deal as the source of that position, but El-Sayed disputed that characterization, saying the proposal was about building renewable energy opportunities.
“Look, I’m not going to defend the Green New Deal,” El-Sayed said. “But what I’m telling you, though, is that we could make a whole lot more amazing jobs if we actually invested in renewable energy.”
Watters reminded the nominee that he was on the record backing the Green New Deal, to which El-Sayed responded by asking whether Watters opposed reducing energy costs and creating jobs in Michigan.
The exchange highlights the delicate balance El-Sayed is striking in a competitive Senate race, as he tries to distance himself from a policy proposal that has become a lightning rod for Republicans while still appealing to progressive voters who support aggressive climate action.
