Andrew Haden, a 48-year-old assistant U.S. attorney, was found dead Wednesday inside a federal building in San Diego, California. His body was discovered in an office at the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Building, and police have said they do not suspect foul play, according to the New York Post. Haden had been reported missing just hours before the discovery.
Southern District U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon issued a statement mourning the loss, calling it âone of the darkest days in our officeâs history.â But Gordon stressed that Hadenâs life was anything but dark. âHe was a beacon of light â full of laughter, friendship, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to serving our community,â Gordon said. âWe will honor his life and legacy by carrying his light forward, today and always.â
A Career Marked by Service
Haden joined the Southern District of California in 2010 and quickly became a nationally recognized trial advocacy instructor, according to the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. His caseload spanned a wide range of serious offenses, including violent crime, racketeering, drug trafficking, immigration violations, child exploitation, cyberstalking, and firearms offenses. Over the course of his career, he conducted more than two dozen jury trials.
Before his legal career, Haden served five years as a Surface Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy, with two overseas deployments supporting Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and Joint Task Force Liberia. He earned his J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law and his B.A. from Stanford University.
According to TMZ, Haden also led the Violent Crimes and Human Trafficking Section and the Criminal Division. He was reportedly married and had two children, per People.
Colleagues Pay Tribute
The legal community in San Diego responded with an outpouring of grief. Southern District of California Chief Judge Cynthia Bashant told the Union-Tribune that Hadenâs death is a âloss for everyone,â describing him as âwell loved and well respected.â Prosecutors, judges, and defense attorneys all paid tribute to Haden following his death, according to the report.
The cause of death has not been released, and authorities have not indicated when additional details might be available. The investigation is ongoing, though officials have not suggested any criminal element.
