Swedish police shot and arrested a suspected swordsman after an attack at a secondary school in Fagersta, Västmanland County, on Friday afternoon, an incident that left at least two teenagers seriously injured, according to local authorities and media reports.
The suspect, described as an 18-year-old former student with a prior assault conviction and a history of mental illness, entered Brinell high school armed with a sword and began attacking students, police said. Officers were alerted around 2 p.m. local time and responded to the scene, where they shot the suspect in the leg before taking him into custody.
Witnesses cited by Swedish media reported hearing several gunshots from inside the school. Police have not released the total number of injured, but a local hospital confirmed it received two seriously injured teenagers for emergency treatment, with additional victims in less serious condition said to be following, according to the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.
