Swedish Police Shoot Sword-Wielding Suspect in School Attack; Two Teens Seriously Injured

Swedish police shot and arrested a suspected swordsman after an attack at a secondary school in Fagersta, Västmanland County, on Friday afternoon, an incident that left at least two teenagers seriously injured, according to local authorities and media reports.

The suspect, described as an 18-year-old former student with a prior assault conviction and a history of mental illness, entered Brinell high school armed with a sword and began attacking students, police said. Officers were alerted around 2 p.m. local time and responded to the scene, where they shot the suspect in the leg before taking him into custody.

Witnesses cited by Swedish media reported hearing several gunshots from inside the school. Police have not released the total number of injured, but a local hospital confirmed it received two seriously injured teenagers for emergency treatment, with additional victims in less serious condition said to be following, according to the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. No fatalities have been reported.

Investigation Underway

Following the arrest, police stated they believe there is no further risk to the public, but they urged residents to avoid the area and respect road closures. Officers noted that a major investigation is underway, involving interviews with a large number of witnesses from the school and a review of security footage.

Shortly after the attack, authorities raided the suspect’s home in the town, though details of what was found have not been disclosed.

Prior Threat and Social Media Posts

Brinell high school was evacuated in May over a threat made against it, and police are now considering whether that earlier incident and a recent series of social media posts may be linked to Friday’s attack. The connection, if any, remains part of the active investigation.

Authorities have not commented on potential motives beyond confirming the suspect’s status as a former student. The attack has shaken the small town of Fagersta, and local officials have yet to issue a public statement.

The incident adds to a pattern of rare but high-profile school attacks in Sweden, which has relatively strict gun laws but has seen occasional violent episodes. Police continue to appeal for public patience as they piece together the events leading up to the assault.
