Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) went on CNN Thursday to defend President Donald Trump’s proposed $5,000 check, arguing that despite progress on inflation and job creation, Americans still need direct relief.
Appearing on “CNN News Central,” Carter said the proposal is a way to get money into people’s hands as the economy continues to recover. “Right now, people are hurting, they need more money in their pockets, and this is a way for us to get more money to them,” he said, according to Breitbart News, which first flagged the remarks.
Carter contrasted the current economic picture with the previous administration, pointing to lower inflation and stronger job growth under Trump. “Yes, this is different from what the Biden-Harris administration [did] and their policies. It’s much different,” he said. “And I would mention to you that inflation is lower than it was during their administration, and that we have created more jobs and we do have a recovering economy.”
The congressman framed the $5,000 check as a deliberate stimulus measure, not just a handout. “People right now, our economy, we need the stimulus, and this is going to help stimulate our economy,” he said. “And that’s what the president is trying to do, and that’s what we’ve done in this administration.”
Carter also argued that the administration has successfully tamed rising prices. “We have addressed inflation…and we’ve made sure that we’ve got inflation under control,” he said, adding that the Federal Reserve should lower interest rates to further support growth.
A pitch that cuts against conventional GOP messaging
Carter’s comments put him in the position of promoting direct government payments at a time when many Republicans have historically balked at deficit spending and large-scale stimulus. His defense rests on the idea that the economy, while improving, isn’t yet healthy enough to stand on its own — and that working families are still squeezed.
The proposal itself has yet to be detailed in legislative form, and it remains unclear how the $5,000 figure would be structured, who would qualify, or how it would be paid for. Carter did not get into those specifics during the interview. But his willingness to go on a mainstream cable network and make the case suggests the White House and its allies see the check as a popular, tangible way to sell their economic record.
The timing is notable. With inflation still a top concern for voters, Carter’s argument amounts to a bet that people will credit the administration for slowing price increases while also welcoming another round of cash. Whether that message lands — and whether Congress ultimately moves on the idea — is an open question.
For now, Carter is one of the more vocal Republican voices backing the plan. His message was simple: the recovery is real, but it isn’t finished, and a $5,000 check is the next step.
