A Hispanic American cleaning company owner in Southern California says her business has been “ruined” after she threatened to call federal immigration authorities on what she described as illegal street food vendors in her neighborhood. The confrontation, captured on video and widely shared, triggered a wave of online retaliation that has left her livelihood in tatters, according to a report from Breitbart News.
Francesca Ortega, who owns Excellent Cleaning Pros, was recorded in the Los Angeles suburb of Santa Clarita confronting the vendors in Spanish and saying she would alert Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The footage was also posted by Fox 11 in Los Angeles. What followed, per the Breitbart account, was a rapid and punishing backlash: critics flooded her previously well-reviewed cleaning business with one-star reviews and hostile comments, and residents reportedly showed up in large numbers to buy tacos at the food stand she had objected to.
A Business Built Over a Decade, Now ‘Flooded’ With Bad Reviews
In a video she posted following the incident, Ortega described the collapse of her company. “Now all of my livelihood is ruined,” she said. “The business that I worked so hard to build for 10 years — we had excellent, perfect reviews — it got flooded, flooded by these insane horrible Latino people.”
Ortega, who told a Los Angeles Times columnist she was born in the United States but raised in Mexico until age 18, had earlier told Fox 11 that she “doesn’t want Santa Clarita to turn into Mexico.” She also pointed to conditions in other parts of the region. “Look how L.A. looks,” she said. “Look how Santa Monica looks, ’cause nobody does anything.”
A Retaliatory Move and a Change of Heart
As the harassment mounted, Ortega made a decision that escalated the conflict: after receiving dozens of harassing phone calls, she changed the phone number on her Google business listing to that of one of her critics, a Southern California resident named Ricardo Morales. Morales then began receiving the deluge of angry calls from across the country. He told Fox 11 that he found Ortega’s actions “vindictive” and criticized her for “harassing people on the street.”
But the toll of the viral firestorm appears to have weighed heavily on Ortega. In an Instagram video posted this week, she was in tears. She said she had been “emotional” during the confrontation because she is pregnant. She begged people to stop targeting her family and said her employees were suffering as the business failed.
“I am not the person I’m being portrayed as in that video,” she said. “I should not have confronted them. I’m sorry.” She added, “Please leave my children and family in peace. They have done nothing wrong.”
She also told Fox 11 that she “never meant to threaten anyone” and that she became upset when a vendor took a photo of her license plate during the confrontation.
Media Scrutiny and a Columnist’s Attack
The story gained further attention when Los Angeles Times columnist Gustavo Arellano weighed in with a column headlined the “Taco Stand Karen Fiasco.” Arellano claimed that Ortega, under an online pseudonym, had been “insulting Latinos on social media with rhetoric that sounded straight from Stephen Miller.” He also alleged she voted for Trump twice and held her up as an example of Latino MAGA supporters who “work off the Trump playbook” and are ridiculed as “self-hating freaks.” The Breitbart report characterized the column as part of the fray.
The Broader Context: Suspended Enforcement
According to Breitbart News, the controversy unfolded against a backdrop of suspended enforcement of street food regulations in Los Angeles County. Both the county Department of Health and the city of Los Angeles, under Mayor Karen Bass, have halted enforcement of street food permits, health standards, and labor laws, even as legally operated restaurants remain subject to strict rules, fines, and closures. Breitbart reported that this suspension was not mentioned by local outlets covering the taco stand controversy.
Breitbart also cited a 662-page dossier of nearly 10,000 public health complaints obtained by the California Post, which included reports of rats invading vendors’ operations and widespread unsanitary conditions. Authorities reportedly suspended the rules in part to protect vendors from immigration crackdowns by the Trump administration.
Breitbart News has published a series of articles on the thousands of illegal and unregulated street food vendors in Southern California, many operated by undocumented migrants. The outlet argued that when a community suspends the rule of law, it opens itself up to vigilantism — and, in this case, to a business owner’s ruin.
