One of the two major lawsuits that derailed Lizzo’s career has been dismissed entirely, marking a significant legal win for the pop star as she continues to fight the other, more serious case.
The dismissed lawsuit was filed in September 2023 by Asha Daniels, a wardrobe designer and stylist who worked on Lizzo’s 2023 tour. Daniels had alleged that she was subjected to racist and sexist harassment, fat-phobia, disability discrimination, and a hostile work environment while working for the singer.
According to court records, the claims against Lizzo personally were dismissed the previous year. On Monday, the claims against Lizzo’s touring company, Big Grrrl Touring, were also dismissed after a judge ruled that they failed to meet the legal standard for a hostile work environment under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.
Lizzo celebrated the ruling on Instagram Tuesday, sharing a video of herself looking relieved with a caption that dismissed the allegations as “ridiculous.”
“All the ridiculous claims by a wardrobe assistant who worked on tour for less than 3 weeks (including a claim they broke an acrylic nail) have been dismissed,” the caption read. “It was all so shocking because I was being sued by someone who admittedly never met me. I prayed for the truth to come out and thanks to my incredible lawyers, the truth has prevailed.”
Daniels’ attorney pushed back on the ruling, telling Billboard that it “appears to minimize evidence of a sexually charged work environment by assessing incidents too narrowly … rather than considering their cumulative impact.” The attorney added that they are “considering appropriate next steps.”
The Remaining Lawsuit
While Lizzo scored a victory in the Daniels case, the more serious lawsuit against her remains active. That case was filed in August 2023 by three of Lizzo’s former backup dancers, who allege that the singer pressured them into sexually explicit acts during a performance in Amsterdam.
According to the dancers’ complaint, Lizzo “began inviting cast members to take turns touching the nude performers, catching dildos launched from the performers’ vaginas, and eating bananas protruding from the performers’ vaginas.” The suit further claims that Lizzo pressured dancer Arianna Davis to touch the breasts of one of the nude women.
The fat-shaming and weight-discrimination claims in that case were dismissed earlier, but the sexual harassment allegations are still moving forward through the courts. Lizzo has denied all allegations in both suits.
Career Fallout
Regardless of the legal outcome, the lawsuits have taken a heavy toll on Lizzo’s career. Her most recent album, Bitch, sold fewer than 3,000 copies in its first week of release two months ago, and only 650 units in its second week. That represents a dramatic collapse for the multiple Grammy winner, who previously topped the Billboard charts and sold out arenas worldwide.
Observers note that the career downturn may also stem from factors beyond the litigation, including Lizzo’s public image and her recent break from the body positivity movement. The singer, who once celebrated her larger frame, has since lost significant weight, a move that critics have called hypocritical.
Lizzo has also faced backlash for her outspoken political views, with some commentators suggesting that her “woke” persona has alienated parts of her fan base. In 2026, that kind of messaging “does not sit well with the public,” according to critics.
