For years, Iranâs strategy was simple: surround Israel with heavily armed proxies so that any conflict would be fought far from its own borders. Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis in Yemen, and various militias in Iraq and Syria formed what Tehran called its âring of fire.â The goal was to project power, deter attacks, and assert regional hegemonyâall while keeping Iran itself out of the line of fire.
As of September 2026, that ring has been reduced to ashes. According to a recent analysis in American Thinker, military action by the U.S. and Israel, combined with aggressive economic warfare by the Treasury, has nearly extinguished Iranâs proxy network. The country is broke, its leadership decimated, and its military capabilities gutted. The rial has hyperinflated to over two million to the dollar, and Iranâs navy has been sunk. Its radar and missile systems are virtually nonexistentâleaving the Islamic Republic a defenseless sitting duck.
The fall of Ali al-Taher, a Hezbollah stronghold in Lebanon, this week marks a symbolic and strategic blow. The base, carved 30â50 meters into rock, was designed to be nearly untouchable. It housed command rooms, weapons stores, generators, living quarters, kitchens, and clinicsâall meant to sustain Hezbollahâs Badr Unit in the sector north of the Litani River. Overlooking Nabatieh and approaches to the Hula Valley, it was a linchpin in the military architecture threatening northern Israel.
But Israel didn’t fight the battle the fortress was built for. Instead, as American Thinker reports, Israeli forces isolated the position, severed logistics, dominated the airspace above it, and waited. The result: Iranâs publicly declared red line was crossed without any significant military response from Tehran. The base fell, and Iran did nothingâan admission that its regional deterrence has eroded beyond repair.

The Financial War: Operation Economic Outcast
On August 24, 2026, Treasury Secretary Bessent announced âOperation Economic Outcast,â described as an âEconomic D-Dayâ against the Iranian regime. The operation is designed to sever the remaining economic lifelines that sustain Iran, targeting the shadow banking networks, smuggling routes, and financial conduits that allow the regime to move money.
Bessent told CNBC that the U.S. would apply the âtoughest sanctions in historyâ against Iran, calling it a âone-two punchâ with the ongoing blockade. âIt is going to work in Iran, and we are going to collapse this regime,â he said. The Treasury is also warning the international community: trade with Iran and face the full might of U.S. financial enforcement.
The most significant sanctions so far have hit Turkeyâs Golden Global Yatirim Bankasi Anonim Sirkati, which had been established to channel hundreds of millions of dollars of Iranian oil revenues from China to Turkeyâwhere it was converted into cash and gold accessible to the IRGC and its proxies. That bank is now cut off. But Bessent signals it’s just the beginning.
Iranâs peak funding of Hezbollahâestimated at $700 million to $1 billion annuallyâis now a distant memory. The regime is struggling to pay even its domestic repression forces. Hezbollah, once the crown jewel of Iranâs proxy network, is rationing what remains, and the parallel state it builtâsalaries, reconstruction, social services, and patronageâis crumbling under the weight of Iranâs financial collapse.

Allies Abandon Ship
Iranâs other proxies are also in trouble. In Iraq and Yemen, the PMF militia and Houthis are being dismantled. In Gaza, anti-Hamas militias and the IDF are picking off Hamas leaders, and breaking out of the cordon seems unlikely. Hezbollah’s command structure has been severely degraded.
The much-hyped scenario of a Russia-China-North Korea-Iran axis coming to Iranâs defense never materialized. China has pivoted to locking in deals with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf. Russia is pulling out its remaining techniciansâAmerican Thinker notes that a private jet, Dexter Air Taxi flight DXT9686, recently evacuated the last Russian personnel from Bushehr and Asaluyeh, flying them back to Moscow. The rats are literally leaving the sinking ship.
Both Moscow and Beijing valued their own energy interests and trade relationships with the U.S. more than partnering with a collapsing regime. The âred lineâ that Iran drew around Ali al-Taher was crossed without consequence, exposing the hollowness of its threats. Even Iranâs much-vaunted ability to choke the Strait of Hormuz failedâmillions of gallons of oil now flow through the strait, except Iranâs own.
In a striking turn, the economic blockade that Iran planned against others is now directed at Iran itself. The regime’s supposed shieldâthe ring of fireâis now a ring of ashes, and the Islamic Republic faces a rising tide of isolation, insolvency, and internal decay. As American Thinker puts it: âIran is being consumed in the flames it lit.â
