As the U.S. midterm elections approach, a group of migrants in Mexico say they are closely watching the political calendar — and waiting for Democrats to win before they attempt to cross into the United States illegally, according to independent journalist Oscar Ramirez, who posted video interviews on X (formerly Twitter) earlier this week.
Ramirez reported that migrants are organizing a caravan of roughly 2,000 to 2,500 people, with a planned departure of August 20 at 5 p.m. from Mexico’s southern border. The interviews, shared by American Thinker, show migrants openly tying their plans to the outcome of U.S. elections and to the political future of former President Donald Trump.
“If Donald Trump was not in office, we will go to the United States, we are just waiting for the Democrats to win the house,” one migrant said in a clip cited by American Thinker. Another man added: “We are waiting for the Senate elections to get rid of Mr. Donald Trump… Right now, we’re forming a caravan of 2,000 or 2,500 people to leave on August 20 at 5 p.m. in the afternoon.”

Ramirez asked one migrant whether he would re-enter the U.S. if Trump were out of office, and the man responded without hesitation: “Of course.”
A woman from Honduras, also interviewed by Ramirez, said she hoped to enter the U.S. illegally if Trump were no longer president. “That’s the idea. That’s what we want, to enter the United States because, honestly, he’s deporting too many people to other countries that are maybe not even their own country,” she said. “We suffer, and the idea is to fully enter the United States… We’ll enter again with the hope that we’ll be working and helping our relatives.”
American Thinker, which first reported on the videos, portrays the migrants’ statements as evidence that the movement is fundamentally political, not humanitarian. “When migrants tell you they are watching elections and rooting for Democrats to win, it’s pretty obvious they are a political project, not refugees,” the outlet writes.

The commentary also argues that the caravan’s existence suggests Mexican authorities are cooperating with the migrants’ passage through Mexican territory, calling that “some trading partner.” The article urges voters to back Republicans to preserve border security, and expresses hope that President Trump can pressure Mexico to halt the caravan before it reaches the U.S. border.
The reports come amid an ongoing national debate over immigration policy and border enforcement. Supporters of stricter border controls often point to caravans as a reason to maintain or expand enforcement measures, while immigration advocates argue that most migrants are fleeing violence or economic hardship and deserve a fair asylum process.
As the midterms approach, political observers note that immigration remains a top issue for many voters. The migrants’ stated strategy — waiting for a change in the U.S. political landscape — underscores the degree to which U.S. domestic politics reverberates far beyond its borders.
Whether the caravan actually departed as planned, and how many people ultimately reach the border, remains unclear. But the interviews provide a rare, direct glimpse into the calculations of some migrants as they weigh the risks of crossing against their hopes for a more permissive U.S. administration.
