The far-left Democrat attended the Black Entrepreneur State Fair last Saturday, where he approached an emcee in a parking lot and attempted a series of unconventional moves, dressed in a button-down shirt, gray dress pants, and sunglasses.
The footage quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing a wave of reactions from viewers who noted that the mayor’s rhythm appears unchanged since his last public dancing appearance. One X user described the clip as a “brutal watch,” while another wrote, “Jacob Frey is the biggest pandering white man dork on earth.” A third commenter asked, “How do people vote for people like this,” and another added, “I’m getting second-hand white person embarrassment from this. It’s terrible representation for our people.”
A Pattern of Awkward Public Moments
This is not the first time Frey has drawn attention for his dance moves. During a Somali Independence Day celebration in Minneapolis last summer, Frey made odd swimming motions as a form of interpretive dance after being handed a Somali flag on stage. The performance was widely mocked online, as was a video from his reelection campaign last year, which prompted one viewer to quip, “Call a doctor; he’s having a seizure.”
Frey has also faced criticism for other perceived instances of pandering. Last December, he joined other state Democrats to share traditional Somali food as a gesture of solidarity. Clips of Frey looking visibly uncomfortable while trying to eat a rice and beans dish circulated widely, with many using the footage as evidence that the mayor is “nothing but a giant phony.”
Critics Question Authenticity
The latest dance video has reignited debates about Frey’s authenticity, particularly his efforts to connect with minority communities. Earlier this year, Frey celebrated Somali Independence Day on X, writing, “Happy Somali Independence Day.” He added, “Here in Minnesota, home to one of the largest Somali communities in the United States, we celebrate the resilience, culture, and leadership that continue to enrich our city and community.”
Despite the backlash, Frey has not publicly responded to the latest round of criticism. The Black Entrepreneur State Fair, which took place over the weekend, was intended to support Black-owned businesses, but Frey’s appearance has instead shifted the focus to his dance moves.
