Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) called on Democratic leadership to forcefully distance the party from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), saying the party must “step up and speak out” against the group’s agenda.
Appearing on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends” on Thursday, Moskowitz acknowledged that DSA-aligned members make up only about 5% of the House Democratic caucus but argued that their influence poses a problem for the party in the general election.
“They are not the Democratic Party,” Moskowitz said. “But I think the Democratic Party needs to step up and speak out.”
The Florida Democrat’s remarks came in response to co-host Brian Kilmeade’s question about whether he would like to see House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) explicitly state that there is “no room for socialists in our party.”
Moskowitz did not hesitate. “Yeah,” he replied. “I think the Democratic leadership needs to speak out against the DSA agenda.”
He cited specific DSA-aligned positions that he believes are toxic for the party’s electoral prospects: eliminating the Senate, abolishing prisons, open borders, and embracing figures like Fidel Castro.
“The Democratic leadership needs to speak out against it,” Moskowitz reiterated, “because, yes, primary stuff is — we’re in the general election now. And this is not what general election voters want.”
The comments highlight a growing intra-party tension as Democrats navigate their post-primary positioning. Moskowitz, a moderate Democrat who has frequently clashed with the party’s progressive wing, has been vocal about the need to moderate the party’s message ahead of November.
His call for leadership to explicitly rebuke the DSA comes as Republicans have sought to tie Democratic candidates to socialist policies, particularly in competitive districts. The DSA has backed a number of progressive primary challengers in recent cycles, and while their numbers in Congress remain small, their visibility has drawn outsized attention.
Moskowitz’s remarks underscored the delicate balance Democratic leaders face: keeping the party’s left flank engaged while projecting a centrist image to swing voters. His plea for leadership to draw a clear line suggests that some members believe the party has not done enough to separate itself from the DSA’s more extreme positions.
The interview was brief but pointed, and it is likely to fuel further discussion among Democrats about how aggressively to confront the socialist label. With the general election underway, Moskowitz’s message was clear: the party’s future depends on speaking out now.
