Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) said Monday that the coronavirus pandemic fundamentally changed his understanding of the federal government, describing it as a revelation about the depth of corruption that permeates Washington.
In an interview with Breitbart News’s Fight Club Roundtable, Johnson said the crisis exposed a systemic problem that goes far beyond individual officials like former NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci.
“My eyes have been thrown wide open in terms of the capture and corruption of not just our federal health agencies,” Johnson said. “I would say every agency, every department of the federal government is captured by the very businesses and interests that they were designed to regulate.”
Johnson’s comments came in response to a question about accountability for pandemic-era decisions, but he quickly broadened the focus, arguing that the problem is not confined to health agencies or specific figures.
“It’s not just what Fauci and the evildoers inside these federal agencies did. It’s across the board,” he said.
The Wisconsin Republican, who has been a leading voice on COVID oversight, argued that the pandemic revealed a pattern in which large corporations have learned to wield government power to their own advantage, often at the expense of smaller competitors and the public.
“They realize, ‘Hey, this ain’t too bad. I can use government. I can use these regulations to my advantage if I’m big enough, if I’ve got enough money,’” Johnson said.
That dynamic, he said, ultimately hurts consumers and the broader American public, as regulations become tools for entrenching incumbents rather than protecting the public interest.
A Warning About Debt and Spending
Johnson also used the interview to sound alarms about the fiscal trajectory of the federal government, pointing to a dramatic expansion of spending since the start of the pandemic.
He noted that annual federal spending has climbed from roughly $4.4 trillion before COVID-19 to about $7.5 trillion today, with deficits now exceeding $2 trillion each year.
“If you want to understand what the problem is, it is government, plain and simple,” Johnson said.
In making that case, Johnson framed the issue in terms of freedom, arguing that the growth of government inevitably comes at a cost to individual liberty.
“As government grows, our freedoms necessarily recede,” he said.
From Budget Hawk to Oversight Watchdog
Johnson acknowledged that his original mission in Washington was to shrink the size and scope of the federal government, a goal he said has become intertwined with his oversight work.
After becoming chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Johnson said he became deeply involved in investigating government actions during the pandemic, which he said reinforced his concerns about corruption and regulatory capture.
His comments are likely to reignite debate over the federal response to COVID-19 and the role of agencies like the National Institutes of Health and the FDA. Johnson has been a consistent critic of Fauci and other officials, and his latest remarks suggest he sees the pandemic as a case study in deeper systemic failures.
The interview comes as Congress continues to grapple with questions of pandemic accountability, with some Republicans pushing for investigations and reforms. Johnson’s characterization of a government “captured” by corporate interests is a stark one, and it is likely to draw pushback from defenders of the federal bureaucracy who argue that agencies operate with integrity and public accountability.
Still, for Johnson, the lesson of the pandemic is clear: the problem is not just a few bad actors, but a system that has allowed government and big business to become intertwined in ways that harm ordinary Americans.
