Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico told listeners of the Higher Learning podcast that Zohran Mamdani is a “template” for Democrats nationwide, and that the party should embrace the approach that carried the New York City mayoral primary winner to victory, according to Breitbart News.
The August 5, 2025 interview came roughly six weeks after Mamdani’s upset win in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary, a contest that vaulted the democratic socialist into the national spotlight and set off a round of strategizing among Democrats about how to replicate his coalition.
In the podcast conversation, Talarico described the New York winner as a model and said the party needed to “adopt” what Mamdani did in order to win elections elsewhere. He did not frame the endorsement as a narrow pitch for left-leaning voters; instead, he presented the Mamdani approach as a general election blueprint.
A ‘Giant Tent’ That Includes Democratic Socialists
Talarico had already made the case for a broad left coalition days before that interview. In a July 29, 2025 appearance on NewsNation’s The Hill, he was asked directly whether his own coalition included democratic socialists.
His answer was an unhesitating yes — in effect. Talarico said Democrats needed a “giant tent,” and that the coalition was “going to include some Democrat Socialists.” He also spoke about reaching “people on the far left,” and described the ultimate objective as “winning power,” rather than ideological purity or intraparty exclusion.
The comments put Talarico on record, before the Mamdani-as-template remarks, as someone comfortable with democratic socialists inside the Democratic coalition — a position that remains contested in some swing-state races, where candidates have tried to keep distance from the party’s left flank.
Mamdani’s own platform included a slate of policies that have become a flashpoint in Democratic debates: free public transportation, a rent freeze, city-operated grocery stores, a $30 minimum wage, and higher taxes on the upper class. During an appearance on Meet the Press, Mamdani said, “I don’t think that we should have billionaires.”
Whether those positions can travel beyond New York City is the central question Talarico is now inviting Democrats to answer in the affirmative.
‘Medicare for Y’all’ and the Sanders Echo
Talarico has promoted a health care proposal he calls “Medicare for Y’all,” a program that, as he has described it, includes coverage for illegal immigrants. The name echoes Sen. Bernie Sanders’s Medicare for All plan — a piece of branding that aligns Talarico with the Vermont independent’s wing of the party even as he runs in a state that has not elected a Democrat to statewide federal office in decades.
The similarities between Talarico’s campaign and Mamdani’s have not gone unnoticed. One of Talarico’s earliest ads mimicked Mamdani’s, and Fortune later proclaimed, “Texas has its own Zohran Mamdani.”
The comparison cuts both ways. For supporters, it signals a candidate who can energize young and left-leaning voters in a state where Democrats have long struggled to turn out their base. For critics, it raises the question of whether a platform built around rent freezes, transit subsidies, and expanded health coverage for undocumented immigrants can win a general election in Texas.
Earlier Remarks on Capitalism and Jesus
Talarico’s leftward positioning is not new. Breitbart News reported on September 1 that during a 2020 Sierra Club climate forum, Talarico described capitalism as one of three interconnected “oppressive systems.” At that event, he thanked young activists for having “drawn the link between climate change and white supremacy and capitalism in our country.”
He added, “And I think only ending the ways that all three of those oppressive systems work together are we gonna be able to begin the process of dismantling them.” The remarks, delivered two years before his Senate run, place him well outside the centrist lane that some Texas Democrats have occupied in past cycles.
During a 2021 appearance on the Activist Theology podcast, Talarico said of Jesus that “the most popular figure in our country, particularly on the conservative right, is this socialist anarchist from Palestine.” The line has circulated among conservative outlets as evidence of Talarico’s comfort with framing his politics in religious and anti-capitalist terms.
Those older comments are likely to resurface as Talarico moves from a primary audience to a general electorate. His campaign has not shied away from the comparisons to Mamdani; the ads that echoed Mamdani’s were an early signal that the Texas Democrat saw the New York race as a proof of concept rather than an anomaly.
What the Mamdani Model Means for Democrats
Mamdani’s primary win set off a wave of national commentary about the durability of the Democratic Party’s establishment wing and the energy on its left. Talarico’s public embrace of the Mamdani template adds a Senate candidate in a Republican-leaning state to that conversation — and does so in explicit terms.
The Texas Democrat’s argument, as he has laid it out across the podcast and television appearances, is essentially that the party wins when it stops policing its ideological boundaries. A “giant tent,” in his phrasing, is not a concession to the left but a mechanism for “winning power.” Whether that theory holds in a state like Texas will be tested in November, but Talarico is not hedging on the premise.
For now, the record shows a candidate who has repeatedly pointed Democrats toward the New York City result as a model, praised the coalition that produced it, and built his own campaign branding in its image. Breitbart News reported the details of his podcast remarks and his earlier appearances, which together sketch a consistent ideological posture rather than an isolated comment.
The question Democrats across the country now face — whether to follow the Mamdani playbook or run away from it — is one Talarico has already answered for himself. As he put it, the party should “adopt” what worked in New York.
