A 16-year-old girl in Tennessee is facing criminal charges after she ran onto a football field during a middle school game Tuesday night and tackled a player, according to local reports.
The incident occurred during a game between South Middle School and Cornersville Middle School, with video capturing the moment the teen charged onto the field amid a scuffle and took down a South Middle player.
According to reports, the altercation broke out after South Middle scored a touchdown and extra point. It was then that the girl—whose identity has not been publicly released—ran onto the field and tackled one of the South players involved in the fight.
School officials intervened to separate those involved and handed the girl over to her parents, who were in attendance, WSMV reported.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office subsequently charged the teen with assault and disorderly conduct, according to WSMV.
In addition to the criminal charges, the teen faces significant penalties from the school district and athletic association. Franklin County Schools issued a lifetime trespass ban from all district properties, and the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association banned her from attending Cornersville Middle School home and away athletic events for one year.
The case highlights the serious consequences that can follow spectator misconduct at youth sporting events. While the girl’s identity has not been made public, the charges and bans underscore how authorities are treating the incident as more than a schoolyard brawl.
Local law enforcement and school officials have not released further details about the extent of any injuries or what led to the initial on-field fight. The video of the tackle quickly circulated online, drawing attention to the role of spectators in youth sports.
