The Trump administration’s decision to officially rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” has sparked a fresh wave of online outrage—and some of the most unhinged protest gestures yet, according to a new piece published by The Daily Wire.
The renaming, which was ordered through the Department of the Interior and is now reflected in all new U.S. Geological Survey publications and data releases, was part of an escalating trade war with Canada. Earlier this month, President Trump announced a 50% tariff on Canadian goods; Canada retaliated with tariffs on roughly $20 billion in American products, including steel. In response, Trump directed the official name change for the lake that borders the two nations.
While critics on both sides of the aisle have mocked the move—including Daily Wire host Matt Walsh, who noted that several American cities are also named Ontario and tweeted, “Not sure how you own Canada by deleting your own history”—the fiercest reaction has been reserved for Google and Apple, which updated their map services to reflect the new official U.S. designation.
Google’s Policy Defense
Google issued a blog post explaining that the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) had formally changed the name of “Lake Ontario” to “Lake America” in the United States. Per the company’s long-standing policy for bodies of water with country-specific names, Google Maps users in the U.S. now see “Lake America,” those in Canada see “Lake Ontario,” and users elsewhere see both names.
Apple, too, updated its maps shortly after Google’s announcement.
The Daily Wire piece, written by a conservative commentator, argues that critics are blaming tech companies for simply following official government records. “The ‘bullsh*t’ that Google ‘decided to go along with’ is… the official name of the lake on formal government documents!!!” the author wrote, adding that calls to drag Google CEO Sundar Pichai into congressional hearings are misplaced.
The columnist did not endorse the renaming itself, instead focusing on what he characterizes as the absurdity of demanding tech companies act as a political resistance.
The Google Employee Rebuke
The most viral counterpoint came from Mike Brock, a left-wing writer and former tech employee, who tweeted a conversation with a friend who still works at Google. The friend was unimpressed with Brock’s “moral preening over Lake America.”
“We are a business. Not the resistance,” the Google employee said, according to Brock’s tweet.
In a follow-up, the employee added: “The company is going to show the legal name. If Americans vote for a moron who legally names [Lake Superior] ‘Stupid Lake’ that’s what Google Maps will show… It isn’t unreasonable. This is elections having consequences.”
The Daily Wire piece called the unnamed employee’s blunt response “the dunk itself” and thanked him for “just eviscerating this writer in his very own tweet.”
Threads Users Take It Personally
But the commentary wasn’t limited to pundits. On Meta’s Threads platform, everyday users reacted with what The Daily Wire describes as “deranged” posts, including pledges to end friendships over lake terminology and one user’s declaration that “Google bent the knee for that f*cking diaper pooping pedophile Trump.”
The author pushes back against such characterizations, noting that Google does not run the Department of the Interior and that advocating for the company to defy the government democratically elected president would amount to what he calls “technofascism.”
MapQuest’s Moment in the Sun
Perhaps the most curious development is the sudden surge in downloads of MapQuest—the outdated web mapping service that many thought was defunct. It turns out MapQuest still displays “Lake Ontario,” likely because it hasn’t updated its data in years.
Some Threads users are celebrating the switch, with one noting that “Apple bent the knee to the fat f*ck” and that MapQuest “even comes with a rainbow unicorn!” (a reference to the service’s quirky interface mascot).
The Daily Wire piece dryly observes: “You may get lost on your way home from the dentist, but at least you’ll be totally sparkly and colorful.”
Reddit’s Radical Proposal
On Reddit’s r/anticapitalism board, one user offered a more extreme suggestion: what if tech companies ran the government? The user seemed to welcome the idea—a prospect The Daily Wire author finds alarming, quipping: “Please keep that energy when ICE has the operational efficiency of Amazon, and illegal immigrants are sent back to Honduras via same-day shipping.”
The piece concludes by affirming faith in democratic governance, writing: “I choose to cherish the fact that I live in a country whose government’s powers are derived from the consent of the governed. (Even if the governed also includes Threads users.)”
As of now, no congressional hearings have been announced, and MapQuest’s servers appear to be handling the influx of new users. The lake, meanwhile, remains wet—whatever you choose to call it.
