Veteran Action Backs Miller-Meeks as ‘Biggest Champion’ for Veterans in Congress

Veteran Action, a group that advocates for America First policies on behalf of the nation’s veterans, is throwing its support behind Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA) in her bid for reelection, releasing a new video ad that casts her as a leading voice for veterans in Congress.

The ad, first obtained by Breitbart News, highlights Miller-Meeks’s two decades in the Army and her career as a physician, presenting both as central to her work on Capitol Hill.

“Two decades in the Army, a career as a physician, Marionette Miller-Meeks brings both to Congress,” a narrator says in the spot, according to Breitbart. The narrator goes on to cite her co-sponsorship of the Veterans Access Act, which the ad says gives veterans more choice in their care, and her Veterans Bill of Rights, which the narrator says makes the VA tell veterans what they are owed.

Mark Lucas, founder and president of Veteran Action, said in a statement that Miller-Meeks is “the biggest champion veterans have in Congress.”

“She consistently leads on veterans issues,” Lucas added. “Her 24 years in the Army and her experience as a physician make her an incredible advocate for veterans.”

A Legislative Record Focused on VA Transparency

The centerpiece of Miller-Meeks’s veterans agenda this Congress has been the Veterans’ Bill of Rights Act, which she introduced earlier this year. According to her office, the measure is designed to ensure veterans are “clearly and consistently informed of their rights when seeking care and benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.”

The bill would require the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to carry out efforts to inform veterans of their rights regarding health care, benefits, and services furnished under laws administered by the secretary.

In a statement at the time of its introduction, Miller-Meeks framed the legislation as a direct response to complaints she hears from constituents back home.

“Our veterans have worn the uniform, defended our freedoms, and upheld our Constitution. They should never be left in the dark when it comes to the benefits and care they have rightfully earned,” she said. “Too often, I hear from Iowa veterans who are frustrated and confused by the VA’s complex bureaucracy. This bill cuts through that confusion, ensuring veterans are treated with dignity, and given clear, accurate information about their rights and available services.”

Veteran Action also points to her support for other veterans-related legislation, including the Veterans’ ACCESS Act and the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act, as evidence of a broader pattern of advocacy.

Primary Win Sets Up a Third Matchup with Bohannan

Miller-Meeks secured her party’s nomination by defeating Republican challenger David Pautsch in the primary. She now turns to the November general election, where she will face Democrat Christina Bohannan.

Bohannan, a former Iowa state representative and a law professor at the University of Iowa, is making her third run for the seat. The district is widely regarded as a battleground this cycle, adding weight to outside endorsements and advertising like the one from Veteran Action.

The group’s ad is part of a broader effort to elevate veterans’ issues in a competitive race where both national security credentials and records on veterans’ care are likely to be litigated before voters. For Miller-Meeks, whose biography as a 24-year Army veteran and physician is central to her political identity, the endorsement offers a chance to reinforce that message with a constituency that has historically turned out in force.

Veteran Action’s ad does not mention Bohannan or any other opponent, instead focusing entirely on Miller-Meeks’s military service and legislative work. The spot is expected to run as part of the group’s independent expenditure efforts in the district.

The race is one of a handful of House contests nationwide that could help determine the chamber’s balance of power next year. With veterans making up a significant share of the electorate in Iowa, both candidates are likely to compete for their support in the closing weeks of the campaign.
