Voter ID Measures Pass in Ohio, Nevada, and North Carolina — Fail in California, Arizona, and Colorado

Voter ID requirements won big in three key states but were rejected in three others, highlighting a deepening divide on election security measures.

Voter ID laws saw mixed results in Tuesday’s elections, with Ohio, Nevada, and North Carolina approving stricter requirements while California, Arizona, and Colorado rejected similar measures.

Wins for Voter ID

Ohio voters overwhelmingly backed a constitutional amendment requiring photo ID for in-person voting, passing the measure by a 66-34% margin. The state already had statutory photo ID rules, but the amendment locks them in at the constitutional level.

Nevada voters approved a similar measure for the second time, requiring either photo ID for in-person voting or the last four digits of a driver’s license or Social Security number for mail ballots. The proposal passed 62-38%, having previously been approved in 2024.

North Carolina also passed a strict voter ID law by a 60-40% margin, extending photo ID requirements to mail-in and absentee ballots. The state additionally approved two conservative tax-related amendments—one capping the state income tax rate at 3.5% and another limiting property tax increases.

Losses in the West

Meanwhile, Arizona voters rejected a voter ID proposal by a 56-44% margin, while California and Colorado shot down similar measures by even wider gaps—59-41% and 63-37%, respectively.

The results underscore a growing partisan divide on election security measures, with Republican-led states pushing for stricter voter verification while Democratic strongholds resist such policies.

Despite Democratic victories in key statewide races, voter ID measures still passed in Ohio, Nevada, and North Carolina, suggesting that even in competitive states, election integrity remains a priority for many voters.
