California Man Arrested After Parking Guillotine Near Supreme Court

A California man was arrested Tuesday after parking a pickup truck equipped with a large wooden guillotine across the street from the U.S. Supreme Court, according to Capitol Police and multiple news reports.

Philan-Tam-Duy Le, 35, was taken into custody on a charge of carrying a dangerous weapon, authorities said. The guillotine, described by Forbes as a “very large wooden-frame guillotine mounted on the truck bed,” was positioned on the vehicle when officers responded to the scene near the high court’s building in Washington, D.C.

Capitol Police said the suspect had driven the truck all the way from California, and investigators were examining his background to determine his motive for traveling to the nation’s capital, according to Forbes.

The Secret Service has said threats against its protectees are “off the charts” and that the agency is operating in a “heightened level of threat environment right now.” Last month, Secret Service Director Sean Curran said the agency had opened more than 10,000 investigations into threats against people it protects—a 40% increase compared with the same period in 2025. The agency also reported that mental health-related interventions are running 10 times higher this year.

Le’s brother told local media that the guillotine was likely intended as a “symbol of disapproval” and that his brother was “unhappy with the state of politics” and held negative views of both President Donald Trump and California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The guillotine carries an unmistakable political symbolism, evoking the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror, when mobs used the device to execute aristocrats and political figures. Its appearance near the Supreme Court—an institution that has frequently issued rulings aligned with the Trump administration—has drawn sharp reactions from commentators.

Some political observers have linked incidents like this to overheated political rhetoric. Critics argue that years of apocalyptic portrayals of political opponents—by Democrats and in mainstream media—have contributed to an environment where unstable individuals may feel provoked to act. The media have been accused of depicting the Supreme Court, Trump, and his supporters as existential threats, which some say can inspire mentally disturbed individuals to attempt intimidation or violence.
