LIBERTY, Mo. — A college football player in Missouri has died after suffering a medical emergency on the field just minutes after scoring a touchdown, according to school officials and local reports.
MicahJo Barnett, a 20-year-old junior running back for William Jewell College, collapsed on the team’s sideline during a home game Saturday against a yet-to-be-named opponent. The game was immediately halted as paramedics rushed to attend to him, and he was later pronounced dead. The exact cause of death has not been released.
Barnett had just scored a touchdown in the Cardinals’ season opener before collapsing, a detail that has left teammates grappling with the cruel timing of the tragedy.
“He scored like, right before his final moments,” teammate Jayshawn Richmond told local outlet KMBC-TV. “And we [are] just going to continue on where he started.”
Barnett, a business administration major, was a standout athlete whose football career was marked by resilience and leadership. At Liberty North High School, he led his team to a state championship as a senior, amassing 1,450 all-purpose yards and 20 touchdowns. He carried that success into college, becoming the Cardinals’ leading rusher last season with 366 yards and four touchdowns despite battling injuries.
Off the field, teammates remembered Barnett as an inspiring presence who lifted others. “He was a hometown kid… Everybody looked up to him,” Richmond said. “He was a guy you go to whenever… you just need a little bit more motivation.”
The sudden death sent shockwaves through the close-knit campus community, which gathered Saturday night for an emotional candlelight vigil on the college quad.
“We are absolutely heartbroken over the tragic passing of MicahJo Barnett,” William Jewell Vice President for Athletics Ryan Erlacher said in a statement, describing the young athlete as an “exceptional young man who made a tremendous impact.”
The tragedy has also drawn attention to a broader pattern of sudden deaths among young athletes. In 2024, the high school sports world was shaken by the death of 17-year-old hockey player Connor Kasin, who collapsed on the ice during a game in Bethpage, New York, and later died at a hospital. Kasin, a defenseman for Massapequa High School and the Long Island Sharks U-18 travel team, was remembered by coach Jeff Tempone as “hard-nosed, hard-working” and someone who “always had a smile and a laugh” on his face.
As William Jewell College mourns, investigators and medical officials are expected to look into the circumstances surrounding Barnett’s collapse, though no timeline for a cause of death has been announced. For now, the Cardinals community is left to grieve a player who, as Richmond put it, was a source of motivation for everyone around him.
The college has not yet announced whether the remainder of the season will be affected, but the emotional weight of the loss is certain to linger.
