A 32-year-old Omaha man is facing serious charges after allegedly threatening to carry out a shooting at a Nebraska Catholic school targeting the grandchildren of Republican Governor Jim Pillen.
Ean Halstead was arrested following an investigation into a message posted on the Columbus Catholic School website. According to authorities, the message stated he would shoot up the school and kill Governor Pillen’s grandchildren along with several nuns.
The threat prompted immediate action from law enforcement, with Governor Pillen later thanking the Nebraska State Patrol for their swift response during a press conference. The governor expressed his concern about the specific targeting of his family members.
“We’re trying like heck to protect our babies. I mean, I got grandbabies that are going into fourth grade,” Pillen said. “So we’re doing anything we can to protect our kids.”
Pillen added that he found it particularly disturbing that someone had conducted enough research to determine where his grandchildren attended school and then issued a threat against that institution.
Standoff and Arrest
When investigators attempted to confront Halstead near his residence on Friday, he fled inside the home and barricaded himself, according to Nebraska Public Media. The standoff lasted approximately one hour before authorities obtained an arrest warrant. Both Halstead and his mother were subsequently taken into custody.
Following the arrest, prosecutors allege that Halstead engaged in efforts to destroy potential evidence. According to KETV News, he allegedly wiped his cellphone, restored it to factory settings, and concealed it inside a guitar. He also reportedly unplugged his internet router.
Digital Evidence
Despite these alleged attempts to cover his tracks, investigators were able to establish connections between Halstead and the threatening message. They determined that the router at his location had been used to access the Columbus Catholic School website. Law enforcement also linked several email accounts to Halstead in connection with the alleged online threat.
Authorities further discovered that Halstead had made eight outbound phone calls to a contact in the governor’s office approximately seven minutes before the threatening message appeared online.
Prior Incidents
Court records reveal this is not Halstead’s first involvement with threatening behavior. In 2022, a former boyfriend filed a protection order against him. That petition alleged Halstead had brandished a butcher knife, threatened to kill the boyfriend and their dogs while they slept, and sent text messages describing violent fantasies including burning down their bedroom.
Charges and Bond
Nebraska prosecutors have charged Halstead with making a terroristic threat and tampering with physical evidence. A judge set his bond at $1 million, reflecting the serious nature of the allegations. Halstead is scheduled to appear in court on August 24.
The case highlights ongoing security concerns for public officials and their families, as well as the vulnerability of schools to threats of violence. The investigation remains active as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat.
