Wynonna Judd has a simple rule for what belongs on a concert stage. Asked about Kacey Musgraves’ profane anti-Christopher Columbus outburst during a Dallas show on Columbus Day, the country veteran told Fox News’ OutKick that performers are entitled to their opinions — but ticket buyers are owed something else.
“When I go on stage, I’m keenly aware that people spend money on the ticket,” Judd said. “And I never hear from my fans, ‘Hey, would you come out and sing ‘Grandpa’ and tell me what your political view is?'”
The comments, first reported by Breitbart News, put Judd at the center of a familiar debate over whether musicians should use their platform to air political views — a question revived by Musgraves’ remarks in Dallas on October 13.
What Musgraves said
According to the report, Musgraves went after the explorer in blunt terms during the Columbus Day concert. “Obviously fuck Columbus,” she said from the stage, calling him “literally the lamest person to probably ever exist” and adding, “What a loser. Christopher Columbus, we hate you!”
The moment landed as the latest in a series of politically charged statements from the Grammy-winning “High Horse” singer. Breitbart noted that Musgraves has previously criticized Texas education rules that include the Bible in school lessons, describing state officials as “forcing” scripture on children and “indoctrinating” them. The outlet also cited her past claim that voting for Donald Trump amounts to “an act of violence,” her stage commentary on the Second Amendment, her social media criticism of Republicans after the 2019 Odessa, Texas, shooting, and an August boycott push over her support for illegal migrants.
Judd’s alternative
Judd framed the issue less as a matter of free speech than of the bargain between performer and audience. Fans, she suggested, want a reprieve from politics rather than another dose of it.
“My job is to be an entertaining person,” she said. “My job is to show my gift and to let it trickle out into the audience and for them to connect with me and for them to go home feeling better than they did when they got there.”
She described her own catalog as reaching past party lines, pointing to a career that has taken her in front of lawmakers and presidents alike. “I’ve performed for seven presidents, Congress, the Senate. I’ll go anywhere and sing to anybody,” Judd said. “I don’t care about all that and people just don’t understand that. Music is for everybody, that’s what’s so great.”
It is a position that sets her apart from Musgraves, whose concerts have increasingly doubled as forums for her left-leaning politics. Judd’s answer to the same question, delivered to OutKick, was that the audience’s money buys a performance — not a sermon.
